The festivities start at moonrise! 🌗 Walpurgisnacht (April 30th – May 1st) is a celebration observed mostly in Central and Northern European countries with roots in Germany. It begins at moonrise on April 30th and ends when the sun rises on May 1st. The night is also referred to as Hexennacht meaning “Witches’ Night.” On this most ominous night it is believed that witches and other cunning folk gather on the Brocken, highest peak in the Harz mountains of Germany, to worship the darker powers inherent in their craft. Tales of maleficent witches conjuring dark beings have described this night for centuries. Although these stories abound, Walpurgisnacht is a night celebrated by all witches as a pivotal point in the cycle of the seasons. All things in nature possess a delicate balance of dark & light, as can be seen in life & death, conscious & subconscious, day & night. This duality brings about wholeness in nature and the cycle of the year is no different. Witches’ Night is the last night of the ‘dark’ half of the year, in which the moon rules the sky. As a heavenly body holding sway over our world, the moon embodies the unknown, the subconscious, and psychic abilities. Witches dance and celebrate throughout the night, giving one last hurrah to the moon’s reign. As the night lightens they greet the Sun as the new ruler of the sky for the ‘light’ half of the year. Much like Autumn-tide festivals (which lie opposite on the wheel of the year), the few nights spanning springtime festivals mark a period of time when the veil between the spirit world and our world is at it’s thinnest. This means that all magical workings performed during this time are more powerful. With this channel open, practitioners are able to harness energies from the spirit world, adding them to the energies gathered from our world. However, for inexperienced witches magic can be dangerous during this night because the dead can enter our realm and hold sway over energies! 🔥 The original drawing of ‘Witches’ Night’ (2015) by Adrienne Rozzi 🌗 #poisonappleprintshop #walpurgisnacht #hexennacht #witchesnight #sketchbook
