montereybayaquarium:

Welcome to the pinnae-borhood! Ear flaps—called pinnae, or auricles—are a tell-tale sign of a sea lion lounging about. Seals don’t have auricles—which is probably why you’ve never seen one wearing glasses!

There are a few more differences between seals and sea lions you can tell from afar:

  • Sea lions are noisy and have that classic ocean-front bark, while harbor seals grunt and growl.
  • Sea lions walk around on all fours, and have long black flippers, while seals “do the worm” up and down the beach with short, stubby flippers.
  • Harbor seals are usually white to black and spotted, while sea lions are largely brown.
  • When sea lions swim, they often hold their head up high, or hop out of the water if they’re on the move. Seals often hold their head low to the water and barely make a ripple as they go.

You can see both from our back deck and all along Cannery Row!

12 Years a Slave’s Storm Reid has landed the lead role in Ava DuVernay and Disney’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic children’s book, A Wrinkle in Time.

The story centers on Meg Murry, a young girl traumatized by the disappearance of her scientist father years before, who finds herself on an interplanetary journey with a schoolmate and her younger brother to find him. They are aided on their quest by a trio of supernatural beings, Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey).

As THR first reported, Disney has made the race of L’Engle’s main characters black or mixed race, making the Murry family now a mixed-race one.

The studio is currently looking for a non-white actor to play the schoolmate, Calvin O’Keefe.

YEEESSSSSSSSS

Goodblock is a really cool adblocker (for Chrome–I don’t know if they have it for other browsers). It shows you one ad per day, which you click on when YOU choose to view it. Until you do, there’s just a cute little butterfly displayed in your window.

The ads are usually legitimately pleasing to look at. There have been a few I even screenshotted (is that a word?) and shared with my family because they made me laugh.

Anyway, you earn hearts by using it, and then you can donate those hearts to one of the charities they partner with.

I seriously recommend it!
